Toyota announced Thursday that, toward the achievement of a carbon-neutral mobility society, it is developing a hydrogen engine. It has installed the engine on a racing vehicle based on Toyota’s Corolla Sport, which it will enter in competition under the ORC ROOKIE Racing banner starting with the Super Taikyu Series 2021 Powered by Hankook Round 3 NAPAC Fuji Super TEC 24 Hours Race on May 21-23.

By honing its under-development hydrogen engine in the harsh environment of motorsports, Toyota aims to contribute to the realization of a sustainable and prosperous mobility society.

Fuel cell electrified vehicles (FCEVs) such as Toyota’s Mirai use a fuel cell in which hydrogen chemically reacts with oxygen in the air to produce electricity that powers an electric motor. Meanwhile, hydrogen engines generate power through the combustion of hydrogen using fuel supply and injection systems that have been modified from those used with gasoline engines. Except for the combustion of minute amounts of engine oil during driving, which is also the case with gasoline engines, hydrogen engines emit zero CO2 when in use.

Combustion in hydrogen engines occurs at a faster rate than in gasoline engines, resulting in a characteristic of good responsiveness. While having excellent environmental performance, hydrogen engines also have the potential to relay the fun of driving, including through sounds and vibrations.




Toyota has long engaged in the innovation of engine technology. Also, it is applying in production vehicles the technologies that it has continued to refine through its participation in motorsports, with the GR Yaris launched last September being one example. And when it comes to safety, Toyota intends to apply the technologies and know-how that it has accumulated through the development of fuel cell vehicles and the commercialization of the Mirai.

Plans are for the hydrogen-engine-powered race vehicle to be fueled during races using hydrogen produced at the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture. While aiming to expand hydrogen infrastructure by promoting hydrogen use, Toyota intends to continue advancing efforts for economic recovery and revitalization of the Tohoku region together with all parties concerned.

Toward achieving carbon neutrality, Toyota has been strengthening its efforts, such as by aiming to promote the use of hydrogen through the popularization of FCEVs and numerous other fuel-cell-powered products. By further refining its hydrogen-engine technologies through motorsports, Toyota intends to aim for the realization of an even better hydrogen-based society.

For over 100 years, millions maybe billions spent trying to reduce & eliminate engine sounds and vibrations.

Tailpipe CO2 greenhouse gases is not only thing that needs to be banned in cities. There is still old style tailpipe pollution (NOx, others).

The atmosphere is NOT pure oxygen. Hydrogen ICE engines may not emit CO2 directly from the hydrogen + oxygen reaction but there is other stuff in the combustion chamber (motor oil, nitrogen, etc) that will create pollutants.

Tailpipe emissions of vehicles used in cities should be zero/none/nada or water. That it.

Minute amounts spewed every fraction of a second multiplied by 100s of thousands of vehicles in a city is no longer "minute amounts"

I personally like the quiet and smooth experience of driving an EV. But my wife and 2 sons, all want to hear and feel the vehicle. To those of you who don't think sound gets your adrinaline pumping, I have one thing to say. Go see an airshow with the Blue Angels, or any POWERFUL jets!
Our bodies equate sounds and vibrations to power. Sometimes that's exciting and sometimes I prefer calm stealth. I actually do hope Tesla eventually does give drivers choices of sounds or no sound.

There are a lot of ways to get periodic adrenaline rushes (one being flooring a Tesla :).
That does not mean that constant exposure is good for health.

OK, as long as it is interior to the vehicle or through headphones.

If everybody is making extra external noise we are back to where we are now.
Hundreds & thousands of "minute/minuscule" droning sounds making health stressing racket.

Burning hydrogen in an ICE is the obvious and easy way to use hydrogen fuel. It's *much* cheaper and easier than using fuel cells, at least based on the eye-popping prices I saw the last time I tried to shop for fuel cells for one of my paper design design exercises.

BUT that doesn't address the question of where you get the hydrogen. Regardless of whether oxidize the H2 in an explosion engine or you oxidize it in a fuel cell, you still need to get the H2 from somewhere.

If they're going to make the hydrogen from green electricity, then you need to evaluate hydrogen as if it were a battery chemistry -- because that's really what it is. The last time I tried to analyze this as with a paper design, batteries were better, faster, and cheaper all things considered. Why not just use the electricity directly?

If they're going to make hydrogen by reforming natural gas, why not just use the CNG directly?

Please wake me up when someone finds a hydrogen mine, or starts flying scoopships into the atmospheres of Jupiter or Saturn to get the hydrogen.

Anyway, good luck to Toyota. I've had great experiences owning Toyota vehicles over the years. Hopefully they have an EV drivetrain ready to go -- because it'd be a shame if, you know, something were to happen to their business.

The way I see it, the hydrogen burning based engines have all the same issues as the ICE engine and possibly more so. Way way to many mechanical parts that need constant maintenance and are ultimately expensive to dig into the engine to service. When there are hundreds of $20 buried parts that cost $2000 each to replace because of labor costs when any one of them fail, I will take a pass now that I have the option. Trying to find a competent mechanic that can fix the "real" issue on the first try is not an easy task. The beauty of the EV drive train is the simplicity and longevity of it. The side benefit is the massive amount of torque inherit to their design and the low center of gravity the vehicle typically has for handling.
