And this is why Tesla works so hard on FSD and safety mechanisms.

But most of it is infrastructure. Fewer driveways, more sidewalks, multi-use paths - especially where you don't expect pedestrians. 'Cause nothing worse than being stranded and not having a way off.

Appears lack of infrastructure and lack of safety protocols appear to be the issue.

I like how we’re always looking for extrinsic solutions to save us when adjusting behaviors will most likely correct the issue.

I assume changes in pedestrian behavior are a major contributing factor as well due to the rise of smart phones since 2010.

Pedestrians have more distractions due to smart phones and Bluetooth devices and are paying less attention then ever, decreasing situational awareness.

Best part is not taking part in idiocracy.

Mind augmentation through mobiles also leads to disassociation with reality.

On many, many levels.

It's like the statistics of "speed kills", versus "drink drivers all speed" because they can't perceive relative motion properly when intoxicated. So if all drinkers speed, and fatalities are from speeding....maybe there's a correlation?

Afterall, 99% of statistics are made up aren't they? ? :ROFLMAO:

Any correlation with the rise in ownership of dumb (..ahmm, I mean 'Smart') phones?

I'm sure that's got nothing to do with it because today's pedestrians are 100 percent Alert in All Things with thumb agility, multi-tasking prowess, and visual acuity unrivaled ! ?

So it must be just the increase in people and cars right? ?

We've always had the lack of infrastructure, but we've continued our built-out of suburbia which is hostile to pedestrians.

Since 2010, though, the proportion of cars to 'light trucks' on the road had greatly sank, meaning collisions are far more likely to be with a more deadly vehicle.

Distracted or not, that's a bad combination.

One of the many reasons that pedestrian fatalities have increased is that vehicles keep getting bigger and bigger, especially pickup trucks. If you’re hit by a sedan or a smaller car it’ll clip and probably break your legs. Your chance of survival is better than getting hit by a truck or SUV, which is like getting hit by a wall. Damage to your entire body in one blow, especially your head, is bad news.
