Well there is a market if there was some leadership. Indonesia is right next door with 280million people too, a few hours by ship off the north coast. EM was even looking at Indonesia as a site for a giga factory, but why not here? Adelaide would be a prime candidate for cars, they shut down GM, Ford and Toyota plants there a few years ago.

We could also just do batteries and/or packs at least, no loss in shipping with those compared to unrefined bulk resources. We could make stainless steel for CT straight out too. Even have the renewables resources here for energy to do it. We might not be the lowest hanging fruit, but we're pretty low. We're also fairly stable and non-volatile as a country, bureaucracy can be nuts, but we can still get things done. We also love pickup trucks...

They're always saying subs will be obsolete. The thing is, there's alot of metal down there, and it's just not easy to access deep water.

So hiding hunters or missiles there always makes sense. The seas aren't two dimentional.

Anyhow, I was making an offhanded comment about the tariffs and taxes that make importing US-made stuff even worse than the exchange rate.

I was reading an article that suggested by the time the next submarine the Ausies bought from the US was finished there was a strong chance subs would be largely obsoleted by technological improvements in detection equipment. The Chinese in particular are working hard on this problem. Soon being underwater won’t be enough.

Any navy ship on the water is already a known item. Knowing where they are doesn't mean they are easy to hit or they fail at their job. The point is that as a deterant they are a launch platform that can carry meaningful munitions, which we don't have capabilities for yet. Those capabilities are something we need with just 40k army, navy and air force. The "lease" arrangement makes them available for us now without waiting for construction.

As for trade protectionism we have heaps of bad deals floating around, mostly to the benefit of others. But I think we can all do better, but not by increasing international trade rather that we all manufacture and produce more locally by getting rid of fake currency exchange rate opportunities and manipulations.
