What's manual control, anyhow?

Everything requires something.

If a Tesla's 'electronics fail' how would you drive it?

Keys, Fobs and RFID have embedded within them ā€œauthenticationā€ schemes to prevent theft. Manufacturers use them as selling points. They execute a handshake.

If the device doesnā€™t present the correct ID that the computer is expecting its a NoOP, no go.

If the computer fails its self-test(i.e. battery disconnect) the anti-theft system crumps, failing any and all devices presented. The vehicle must be returned, tge anti-theft wiped clean and cold boot the system. All authentication devices must be reprogrammed, re-paired and booted into anti-theft ON status.

If Teslaā€™s authentication system fails. The same computer that defaults to crump could instead default to a separate keyed system, numberpad authentication or obscure kill switch that need be thrown.

Manual override circumvents the normal customary manufacturer chosen authentication system in the event of <IDK> providing that the vehicle is physically reconfigured by hand for operation w/o mfgr authentication.

There is no manual switch that works in the event the computer fails, total loss of energy or 12v SS battery dies. Tho Iā€™d like there to be a field fix for that last scenario, someday.

Is it too much to ask? What is wrong with a manual override?
After having my phone die on me in the middle of nowhere, I carry my key card with me all the times.

Iā€˜d highly recommend always keeping it.. have mine on a phone wallet.

If the electronic system failed, you cannot drive your EV.

The motor requires carefully timed pulses of current to even move. The battery requires carefully managed voltage draw and distribution and temperature. The UI needs electricity to operate, and the main computer has to assert that all these systems are operating.

If any of that has failed, you aren't going anywhere.

I honestly donā€™t remember ever having my phone go dead. But I am thinking about getting one of those rings with the RFID chip embedded. Partially for the emergency backup you are referring to, but more because itā€™s so fĀµĀ¢king cool.

Also can be found on Amazon.

Fairly uncommon for me too, camping trips tend to kill batteries though. A drop will do it too.

A cable wired to a manual throttle, with an orifice jet controlled fuel delivery and a mechanically operated fuel pump. Nothing else anyone described here is "manual" and they are simply delusional.

Maybe a carburetor, sure, but that's pretty dang ancient and inefficient. There were EVs that used manual current regulation, but they were inefficient and... weird.

Exactly. There have not been "manual overrides" on cars in a very long time. Never will be again. People calling for some kind of manual mode in a Tesla...LOL!
