Possible First Look at Tesla’s New Affordable Car at Fremont Factory
Tesla’s upcoming affordable vehicles may closely mirror the design language of the brand’s existing lineup, according to recent hints from company leadership.
During Tesla’s Q1 2025 earnings call, Lars Moravy, VP of Vehicle Engineering, indicated that the more budget-friendly models set to launch this year would share significant design similarities with current offerings like the Model 3 and Model Y. Drone footage captured at the Fremont Factory earlier this month may have given Tesla enthusiasts their first real peek at these highly anticipated vehicles — often nicknamed the “Model 2” or “Model Q” by fans.
Spotting the New Model
Longtime Tesla observer and drone videographer Met God in Wilderness recently posted fresh footage from above the Fremont site. While most of the plant's activity seemed routine, a few peculiar vehicles quickly caught the attention of sharp-eyed followers on social media.
On a flight recorded April 17, an unusual, unfinished vehicle was seen parked near completed Model S and Model Y cars. What stood out was the vehicle’s roofline — noticeably slimmer compared to the Model Y around it. Its overall silhouette hinted at a compact crossover shape, suggesting Tesla might be pursuing the popular smaller SUV segment.
Another drone flyover on April 24 revealed yet another mystery vehicle. This one featured a more pronounced sloping rear, differing from the crossover-like profile spotted earlier, though it was still mostly covered, leaving details to speculation.
Company Insights
In Tesla’s Q1 2025 shareholder update, the automaker reaffirmed that production plans for new, more affordable models remain on track to start within the first half of 2025. These new vehicles will incorporate elements of both Tesla’s current production lines and upcoming next-gen innovations, while being assembled on the same lines that currently build the Model 3 and Model Y.
During the earnings call, Moravy emphasized, “The models you’ll see in the coming months will look quite familiar — they’ll be built alongside our current vehicles and will offer a more accessible price point. The important thing is, they’ll be affordable and available to buy.”
