My journey to the Cybertruck

So my family’s plan was probably pretty similar to others. We had decided the Cybertruck was a good option for us. We planned to save up some money and then in 2022 or 2023 when our number came up we would trade in our Highlander and buy the Cybertruck.

But I began to run some numbers. With the incentives in Oregon and two years of fuel savings, and some upcoming maintenance needed on the Toyota (tires, windshield, etc) it made sense to me and my wife to buy a Model Y while we wait. In fact, it may actually cost less to buy the Y... but we’ll see.

So on August 1st we put down the $100. Over the next few days we completed the next steps and now we wait for Tesla to make our Y.

We have reserved a Long Range AWD in Midnight Silver. The listed price is $49,990 + $1000 for the color. No full self driving or toe hitch. With all taxes and fees added in it comes to $53,519.96.

After I take possession I can apply for Oregon’s incentives, which add up to $5000 for me. It will likely take several months for me to actually see that money. But in the end my total purchase cost should be about $48,500.

I’ll probably add the HomeLink option too.

My main concerns right now are fit & finish (of course) and preparing my garage for Level 2 charging. I do already have a level 2 charger for my Fiat, but I am adding a 2nd charger on the opposite wall that will be for the Model Y and eventually the CT. As I type this I’m waiting for FedEx to deliver a new breaker so I can start to run the new circuit.

This thread will be a blog of sorts that shows the path our family is taking to taking possession of a Cybertruck. Enjoy it or ignore it or learn from my mistakes. Hope to have some Model Y pics in here soon.

For me the trip to cybertruck was not love at first sight. It was more of a fascination that I could not stop thinking about. It wasn’t love at all. Not even lust. Simply an all-consuming passion. It’s like that girl you see in class. She’s is not your model beauty. She doesn’t wear the highest fashion. Still, something about her causes you to think about her day and night. Why? Why can’t you put her aside elsewhere in a dark corner of your brain and forget about her? Everything reminds you of Cybertruck. You replay the introduction video over and over and over again. You talk to others about her, not so much to get affirmation or recognition, but it’s because you can’t get her out of your mind.

You try to order but each time talk yourself out of it. FSD is expensive. You don’t need a vehicle that costs $70,000 and can go 0-60 in under three seconds. You just WANT her. Why? Why? WHY?!

Eventually the rational part of your brain gives up. Fuck it! I’ll eat Ramen noodles for the next 3-4 years. I’ll forgo vacations. I don’t need that root canal. You’ll do anything for her.

That is my Cybertruck journey.

For me, I'm not a truck person. I'm a small car person - I prefer small. When my friends were driving Jeeps and trucks I was showing them that I could split a trench in a mid-80's Civic.

But I love going into the wilds. And we've long talked about getting something more capble.

I don't want a big truck. But I do want a truck. I need to carry things, we have a house now, and carrying a ton of bricks in a Mazda 3 is really pushing things. The only electric trucks out there now are small snort-range slow-charging things which would require me to have it and another car.

The Cybertruck is... When I saw its design, I knew I wanted one. It looked like what I wanted when I was a little kid. It made me feel like a little kid. The price, with full self driving was less than a third of my house. My spouse said I wasn't allowed to drool over cars that cost more than a third of our house. I ordered one that night.

It's been over 5 weeks since we ordered our Model Y. Still no VIN issued for us. When we ordered the estimate said 5-8 weeks. Tesla delivers Model Y's (and other models?) by region and it looks like us folks in the Pacific Northwest are the last region for the quarter. We hope to get it this month.

On the bright side, I got my garage all ready for Level 2 charging for a Tesla. Just need the car. It's also ready for the Cybertruck!

One point of interest on the Y... I had been considering ordering one to use until my CT arrives and on Friday of last week, an estimated delivery date showed '2-4' weeks. Very short, IMO, but I thought maybe they had a lull in sales like the others. On Monday, the time frame changed to 10-14 weeks.... maybe they are stopping production to make changes to the battery (ahead of battery day) or they are integrating the new 'giga-press'... or whatever they call it?

The current wait time on a Model Y is 8-12 weeks.

If you have a 30amp 220v dryer plug I would try this Tesla NEMA adapter first for $35...

Took delivery of this today. My first Tesla.

Some thoughts on delivery. They have an odd way of filling orders. Every quarter of the calendar is it's own "delivery window." Each quarter they roll out orders by geographical area. Europe first, then other markets, then the east coast, then central NA, then western NA. So that means I, as a west coaster, could order a car on July 4th and not get it until late September, while someone on the east coast could order on August 20th and get there's on August 30th. It's hard to see people that ordered way after you get there Y first. *first world problems*

I am convinced people that live in North America that ordered a dual or tri motor Cybertruck will be able to get their truck fairly soon. Yes, I'm judging completely off my Model Y experience, but I'm sticking with that prediction.

The delivery center is a madhouse. Hundreds of vehicles are dumped into your area all at once. I can't imagine how they will fit all the Cybertrucks into the lots.

We are planning to own this Y for about 24 months. The adventure begins...

I heard a lot of horror stories before and after picking up my Model Y, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well built my Y turned out. A couple minor panel gaps but nothing worth worrying about. Overall I think it was built better than the Highlander I traded in. If my Cybertruck comes built this well I’ll be very happy.
But then I discovered this...

I think it’s kind of funny. About a month a before my Y was built Tesla redesigned the brake light assembly. Somehow when mine was built I got one old brake light and one new light. As seen below. Service appointment scheduled for Friday. Hope this doesn’t turn into a months long repair like I’ve read about with others...
