Steel bollards are 'causing carnage' for frustrated drivers on a street in Hertfordshire because vehicles, including a police van, are crashing when trying to squeeze through a seven foot gap.

A doorbell camera captured eleven crashes in just four weeks as drivers struggled to navigate the controversial traffic scheme in Woodmere Avenue, Watford.

In one video a police van is seen smashing into the safety barriers, while the wheel was ripped from a car in another crash.

The bollards were put in place to make the street safer but people living there said cars were having accidents 'every day'.

"I've caught my car twice! I've had the wheel arches done, there are always cars stuck in here," said one resident.

The problem has been caused by six steel bollards placed just seven feet apart to stop heavy good vehicles coming through.

Hertfordshire County Council is responsible for the road and is working to find a better long-term solution, including using traffic cameras instead of bollards.

Curious that these bollards are being used to restrict large vehicles from going down this street. But the width is 7 feet. Cybertruck is 6'8" so it should fit (tightly) through here.

I also notice that there is a center lane that has no such restriction for busses to go through. Not sure why the police don't just use that center lane. Or "cheaters". Or people who have hit the bollards in the past.

This is one of the situations that I might like FSD to do the drive through for me. Or if there are enough cameras on the sides, maybe I use those to guide my CT through without injury. At least if I take it slow, there shouldn't be too much injury to the SS skin if I nick the bollards.

I think it's hilarious. Part of the reason is that the bollards are slightly offset and the warning sign is a bit small. There should be a sign at the start of the block since this is at the end.

The thing is these are not important collisions - these are not as hazardous as hitting pedestrians. So we shouldn't really care if cars get banged up once in awhile because of bad drivers - we should care if people are getting injured. Caring about collisions instead of injuries leads to creating roads which are worse for non-car road users.

You see the reason for these and other so called traffic calming measure here in the U.K. is because the establishment are anti car, they would like everyone else (not them) to bicycle everywhere. Love driving in your country here not so much.

Planning to make it easier to drive in residential areas leads to more pedestrian deaths in those areas. Cars are great, but they don't belong in the middle of the village.
