Tesla Reportedly Wants To Build $24,000 EV In India
The entry-level Tesla EV would reportedly be built for both local and export markets

July 25, 2023

The Tesla Model 3 starts at $40,240 and that’s far from affordable for many consumers. However, the company is reportedly gearing up for talks focused on an all-new car that could retail for as little as $24,000.

Citing a source, Reuters is reporting that Tesla representatives will meet with India’s commerce minister to discuss the possibility of building a plant in the country. That facility would reportedly build the affordable EV for both local and export markets.

Little is known about the car at this point, but the publication reports Tesla has had its eye on India for awhile. In particular, executives reportedly traveled to the country in May to have discussions with officials about building batteries and vehicles in the country.

It appears the latest round of talks are a continuation of those earlier discussions, but they’ll be at a higher level given the reported involvement of commerce minister Piyush Goyal. While details are limited, it’s believed the upcoming talks will be focused on setting up a supply chain and land for a factory.

It remains unclear if the affordable EV will eventually be built at other factories, but Reuters noted the company is building a plant in Mexico that will make vehicles on a “lower-cost, high-volume platform.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been talking about an entry-level model for years and has previously suggested it will be “used almost entirely in autonomous mode.” Of course, he says a lot of things that don’t pan out.

That’s cool for India! Can’t sell those in America, Tesla would never sell a full sized overpriced S3XY again.

Tesla will sell a $25K vehicle in the US at some point, even if it requires the $7,500 rebate at first. They’re not trying to be just a luxury brand. They want volume sales, hence slashing the prices of their current models (in-stock Model 3s are selling for around $37,000 before tax incentive).

Right. The India plant would theoretically supply the Asian and possibly European market. New MX plant would serve the Americas including US. And they'll likely need more plants for this world car. If the form factor is a short-tailed 3- or 5-door, then they can make a small battery base trim, econobox city car, and also a pricier performance Hot Hatch version that will do very well in the US. I believe they will size it to the market such that it will compliment, rather than cannibalize Model Y sales.

Giga Mexico will definitely lead the way and supply North America and possibly South America (although they take imports from China). Then they will copy and paste this process to Shanghai (which was supposed to kickstart the $25K model) and other Giga factories in the future. A Giga India would help them to fulfill demand while keeping costs low. I don’t think the $25K model will ever be built in the US or Germany.

A low priced car at high volume, would have to be built on every continent to reduce transport cost.
And at every Gigafactory for the same reason and also to help produce the 4-5 million.
