Airbag that descends from the roof/visor or seat-back might be safer than airbags shooting directly at your face at 150mph from the steering wheel or dash. Current direct at your face from front airbags frequently break wrists, arms and slam hand/arm into your face causing severe damage to face & eyes.

If you have a phone in your hand the airbag has good chance of slamming the phone and your hand into your face.
Drinking out of a metal/plastic cup and airbag slams cup & your hand into your face.
Taking a bite from a burger, etc and airbag slams your hand into your face.

Children in front or back seats might also be better protected by airbags that descend from the roof/visor or seat-back.

Also many adults with shorter arms have to sit much closer to steering wheel airbag and have much higher risk of injury from the force of airbag deployment.

What Happens If The Airbag Goes Off When You’re Texting And Driving?
An airbag deploying right in your face can turn out to be extremely unpleasant if you're holding your phone up between your face and the steering wheel.

What happens if you sit too close to the airbag?
Is Sitting Too Close to the Steering Wheel Dangerous? Because a steering wheel airbag can generate a force of nearly two thousand pounds at speeds in excess of 200 miles an hour, sitting too close to the steering wheel and airbag can cause catastrophic injuries or death on impact.

Airbag induced facial and bilateral ocular injuries
We report a 14-year-old child who sustained facial burn and bilateral ocular injuries affecting both the anterior and posterior segments due to an inflated air bag in a low speed motor vehicle accident.
He was in the passenger seat, not using his seat belt, not wearing his glasses. While the car he was in was parked it suddenly received a hit from behind.

ZF is regarded as a pioneer of the Bag-in-Roof airbag, which helps to protect front-seat passengers of widely differing sizes in various seating positions. The roof-mounted airbag can be a valid alternative to traditional dashboard-mounted airbags.
The roof-mounted airbag (technically, Bag-in-Roof or BiR) celebrated its premiere back in 2014. In 2020 the application of the third BiR generation was launched.
https://passivesafety.com/nextlevel..._technologies/stories/bag_in_roof_airbag.html

.....
first production vehicle to feature the innovative airbag was an SUV with suitably generous headroom: the Citroën C4 Cactus. The Bag-in-Roof was subsequently used in other PSA Group vehicles, such as the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Rifter and Opel Combo.

.....
In addition to the wide range of vehicle types on today’s roads, roof-mounted airbags are suitable for future vehicle concepts such as robotaxis.

.....
But that’s not all. The airbag module also reduces loads and stresses on the windshield. This interaction between airbag and windshield could generate stress on the glass under certain circumstances. Whereas, the roof-mounted airbag deploys in parallel with the windshield, reducing the risk of stress to the windshield.

Future Ford Vehicles Could Get Door-Mounted Airbags

This new airbag design consists of units mounted along the top of the vehicle’s pillar, which would inflate in the event of a collision. The airbags would inflate not only outward, but also down, providing near complete protection along the entire span of the doors.

a passenger in the proposed middle front seat of a CT's forehead would be within an inch or two of the monitor <assuming an adult...

an airbag deploying downward would .. Unless i am picturing this wrong.. deploy against the persons neck..

the trick with down and forward airbags is they have to deploy along the windshield so they can ensure they never catch the back of the persons head... i am not clear how that would work in a middle seat with a Tesla style monitor... the only way i can see an airbag working from there is either bottom of the dash.. or the monitor mount so it deploys between the monitor and the passenger.

Elon mentioned Tesla air bag deployment is so advanced, that AI can tell if a child or adult is seated and deploy accordingly. We could maybe? do without seatbelts.

If it can do that, I think we can rest easy in the middle seat... if it has one.

In my model Y the driver is closer to the wheel than a person in the middle would be to the screen (if even with driver)

and in your model y the airbag comes from the steering wheel and if they have <i don't think they can> a curtain air bag it CAN deploy along the windshield coming over the top of the steering wheel

Not sure how that compares to a middle seat passenger with a screen taking up a large space in front of them??

One argument for FSD is text like this: "What Happens If The Airbag Goes Off When You’re Texting And Driving?" because if someone is texting 'and' driving then they kind of deserve what happens to them from the air bag; they kind of deserve whatever happens. But the problem you present is that, even with FSD (under a full autonomy scenario - L3-L5), you could legally be texting, eating, etc. and still be damaged by the air bag.

Sure YOU can assume an adult but why? Are you also assuming all 6 are adults of height 72"?

There are plenty of driver & passenger groups made up of adults of various heights and children of various heights.

Most children 12 years and younger are less than 56".

There are many adults less than 62" (5ft 2in).

Average height for women is 64" (5ft 4in) so there are many women less than 64".

In U.S. there might be close to 100 million passengers that are too short to hit a screen in middle of dash.

What??? Do you know how airbags work?? They deploy in approx .05 second ( approx 150-200mph).

Even from the roof the airbag will get deployed in front of person not in back of their neck.

Did you read my post? There have been roof/visor mounted airbags in some production cars since 2014.

There are even patents from Ford for airbags that deploy from back of seat that are still supposed to get deployed and catch person before they move too far forward.

You said they were inches away from the screen, and while, everything can be measured that way, they are not that close. An airbag could come down from the roof area and stop an impact. If they needed to just have it smash into the screen so be it

Use your imagination

If your truck gets picked up and thrown by the hulk, those middle seat people couldn't possibly have the airbag save them in time. Face, meet screen, boom. Impossible middle seat

And in the US there is a HUGE percentage of the population that are more than 48”…. WIDE!

Looks like roof/visor deployed airbag would just cover up a dash display.

The airbag maker, ZF said the roof/visor airbag is also designed to not put too much pressure on windshield.

Bag-in-Roof airbag is installed in the headliner instead of the dashboard and deploys along the windshield. With automated driving, it provide enhanced occupant protection for new seating position.
